About Jakarta |

Jakarta is the dynamic capital city of the
Republic of Indonesia. It was formerly known as Sunda Kelapa
(397-1527), Jayakarta (1527-1619), Batavia (1619-1942), and
Djakarta (1942-1972). It has an area of 661.52 km˛ and an
official population of 8,389,443 (2000[1]). Jakarta currently is
the eleventh largest city in the world. Including the closely
surrounding integrated cities of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and
Bekasi, the population swells to more than 23 million people.
This massive Metropolis is affectionately known as Bodetabek by
the local citizens. Jakarta is located on the northwestern coast
of Java Island, at the mouth of the Ciliwung River on Jakarta
Bay, which is an inlet of the Java Sea. The northern part of
Jakarta is situated on a level plain approximately eight meters
above sea level. The southern parts of the city are hilly.
Jakarta is one of Indonesia’s designated tourist areas. It is
a gateway to other tourist destinations and is equipped with all
the means of modern transportation; by air, sea, rail or by
land. It has the largest and most modern airport in the country,
the most important harbor in Indonesia and is well connected by
rail and good roads to other destinations in Java, Sumatra and
Bali.
As a historical city & tourist area, Jakarta has many
attractions such as Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful
"Indonesia in Miniature" Park), restored colonial period
buildings, island resorts in the Pulau Seribu Area (Thousand
Islands) and an extensive beach recreation complex called Ancol. |
